This is a 9 or 10 week program helping young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities increase their independence. These young adults will be living in 4/4 apartments with a support person and you will be helping them learn skills needed for independent living such as learning to plan menus, grocery shop, wash clothes, take public transportation, get along with roommates, plan social engagements, budget money, etc. You serve 40 hours per week for 9 weeks, from June 3 through August 4, 2019, and receive $2,125 plus an education award of $1,289, which can be used to help pay for classes in college or repay a college loan. (We also have a few positions which will last for 10 weeks.)
The requirements of the program do not allow for exemptions from the number of weeks or the 40 hour schedule however, the weekly hours can be somewhat flexible – there will be some evening and weekend hours which will be worked out individually.
This opportunity is part of the VISTA program from the Corporation for National and Community Service. In addition to the financial and educational benefits, volunteer service is a great enhancement to a resume or college application.
